I ain't gonna change cranks to lose 100g in fact I've had XT cranks on the bike earlier (at least 200g lighter) but they look boring and I couldn't feel any difference in performance. As for the tyres - yes they're heavy but they feel great bombing down the hill and that's what I'm most interested in. I've got all sorts of parts at the shop that I could use - what you see here is what I like.

As far as I know SLX 2 rings & bashguard weigh around 1000g and my Saint cranks weigh 1125g. (My bashguard weighs 50g which is way lighter than the SLX) I'm not worried about 125g and I love the look of the classic original Saint.

To tell the truth the original Vanilla is a very good basic shock. I work in a bike shop so I buy parts at cost price - that's why I 'm able to make so many changes to my bike. I also like to know how things work and what the differences are between products for my own satisfaction as well as being able to talk to customers with some knowledge. The DHX has a lot of adjustments available and it took me weeks to get it dialed. I tried plush, stiff and everything else between and I reckon the settings I've arrived at are fairly close to my original Vanilla! Maybe a tad plusher in the mid stroke and ramping up towards the end because I've got the bottom out resistance knob wound half way in. I guess the bottom line is if you were racing DH I'd say buy the DHX, but for general riding the Vanilla is going to be fine. If you've had the shock since 05 though, I'd definately get it serviced.

Yes - Hussefelt cranks renamed Hammerschmidt that don't fall off - now there's a revolution!
